City of Brockton Seeks Director of Planning & Economic Development

The City of Brockton is currently seeking an experienced and forward-thinking professional to serve as its next Director of Planning & Economic Development, a senior leadership position reporting directly to the Mayor of Brockton.

This role is responsible for leading citywide planning, housing strategy, and economic development initiatives that support Brockton’s long-term growth and vitality. The Director works closely with the Mayor’s Office, City Council, boards and commissions, community stakeholders, and private-sector partners to advance thoughtful development and neighborhood stability across the city.

Key responsibilities include overseeing the City’s Comprehensive Plan and district planning efforts, managing federal and state grant programs including HUD funding, advising on land use and zoning matters, and coordinating economic development initiatives that support local businesses and commercial corridors. The Director also leads departmental staff, manages budgets, and represents the City to regional, state, and federal partners.

This position requires a strong background in urban planning and economic development, with demonstrated experience in leadership, negotiation, and public engagement. The ideal candidate brings the ability to integrate planning, design, finance, and implementation into cohesive strategies for complex, multi-faceted development projects.

Position Details

  • Title: Director of Planning & Economic Development

  • Salary: $139,519 annually (firm and non-negotiable)

  • Status: Full-time, in-person (not eligible for remote work)

  • Reports To: Mayor of Brockton

  • Location: Brockton, Massachusetts

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public administration, business administration, or a related field

  • 7–10+ years of relevant professional experience

  • Strong knowledge of urban planning, zoning, and economic development practices

  • Proven leadership, communication, and stakeholder engagement skills

  • AICP and/or CEcD certification preferred
